The Illinois Children’s Healthcare Foundation (ILCHF) and Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation announced the creation of the Oral Health Nitrous Oxide Sedation Initiative, a new oral health program aimed at improving the oral health of children in Illinois. Both foundations are contributing $500,000 each in funding for programs designed to enable non-profit organizations to safely administer nitrous oxide to children requiring conscious sedation for oral health service.

Ongoing disparities worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic make it difficult for many Illinois children to receive needed oral health care. The annual Community Grants Program continues to help alleviate obstacles to oral health care by working hand-in-hand with organizations statewide to make sure Illinois children can access quality health care.

Children’s Oral Health
Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation, the charitable arm of Delta Dental of Illinois, is committed to improving the overall health and well-being of Illinois residents, with a focus on children.
Over the past 12 years, the Foundation’s Land of Smiles program has visited 892 Illinois elementary schools, educating more than 426,000 Illinois children from ages pre-kindergarten through third grade on the importance of good health care.

As Illinois schools prepare to resume classes this fall — whether in person, remote or a hybrid approach — parents should make sure their kids are healthy and well to start the school year right. That includes a visit to the dentist for a checkup before classes begin.
With the focus in recent months on social distancing, wearing face masks and handwashing, there likewise remains a need to continue practicing preventive oral health care.

Our Community Grants Program offers support to organizations that provide oral health care and/or education to children in Illinois. Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation has awarded nearly $1 million over the past six years to Illinois organizations committed to improving children’s oral health.
In 2018, we awarded more than $180,000 to 21 nonprofit and community organizations with programs and services that improve children’s oral health in Illinois. One recipient was Advocate Children’s Hospit

Tooth Fairy giving is down across the nation with average payouts taking a plunge for a second consecutive year, including a significant decrease in the Midwest. The average amount Midwestern kids receive for a lost tooth from the Tooth Fairy dropped a full dollar over the past two years – and remains the lowest amount in the nation.
