Thwart the Back-From-Break Blues

Posted on January 15, 2018 in General oral health

Going back to school after a holiday break can be tough for kids of all ages. It usually means readjusting to old habits, and that should include your child's oral health care routine. Here are a few ways to make sure your child finishes the remainder of the school year with an A+ in oral health:

  • Along with stocking up on school supplies, make sure to keep your fridge and pantry stocked with tooth-friendly foods like fruits, veggies, cheese and nuts. These foods contain rich sources of vitamins and minerals1 that keep oral health in tip-top shape.
  • Healthy study habits are integral to your child's academic success, and good brushing and flossing habits are necessary for a healthy mouth. Make sure your child is brushing twice a day for two minutes each time and flossing once a day. Starting off the school day with a sparkling smile is a great feeling!
  • When you're not scheduling a parent teacher conference, make sure you are scheduling regular dentist appointments for each member of the family. The number of recommended dental visits varies depending on the individual, but twice a year is typically a good standard for most.2
  • With a new year comes new goals. Make oral health habits part of your New Year's resolutions . Encourage your children to do the same, and welcome the new year with vibrant, healthy smiles.
  • Send your college student off to school with fresh oral health supplies such as toothbrushes (or toothbrush heads), floss, mouthwash and healthy study snacks.
  • There's nothing like a home-prepped meal to get you through the day! Pack your child a lunch with string cheese, veggies and milk instead of sugary and starchy foods like cookies, chips or candy.
