Healthy Celebrations: It's Easy!
New Year's Eve isn't the only time for celebrations. Whether you're anticipating a new baby in the family, a big anniversary, or a promotion at work, 2014 is sure to have its share of festivities. Whatever occasions you are celebrating, keep them happy and healthy by following these tips.
Say No to Cigars
Though it's common to commemorate a new baby or a big promotion with a celebratory cigar, it's best to steer clear. The addictive and toxic compounds in a single cigar can be as high as that of an entire pack of regular cigarettes. If you're already hooked on cigars or cigarettes, however, it's never too late to quit. Within 12 hours of your last smoke, the carbon monoxide in your blood returns to normal. Within one year, your added risk for coronary heart disease drops in half. So stub out that smoke now, and if you're a non-smoker, don't start – not even for celebrations.
Be Aware of Wine
If you're toasting with wine, white will keep your teeth stain-free. Red wine has its benefits, though: It's a great source of antioxidants and may also help fight heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Should you opt to clink glasses with a goblet full of red wine, wipe your teeth with a tissue afterward, or swish with water to rinse some of the residue from your teeth. You can also buy wine wipes, special cloths that are designed to clean teeth post-wine.
Temper the Treats
Celebrations are sweet – often literally! Cookies, cakes, and other sweet treats tend to go hand-in-hand with parties, but it's important to keep consumption to a minimum. Choose one of your favorites and really savor it – and then stick to tooth-friendly foods such as veggies, cheese, and lean meats.
