Be Safe Boating
Are you one of the lucky people who will boat on Lake Michigan this 4th of July weekend? Lake Michigan is the third largest lake of the Great Lakes and touches four states – Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. No matter what part of the lake you're enjoying, take time to be safe this summer.
Did you know? Every 2 ½ hours someone is killed or injured in a boating accident, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Here are some tips to keep you safe this weekend:
Wear a life jacket. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, there's a one in 66 chance of drowning if you wear a life jacket, compared to a one in 11 chance if you're not.
Take a boating class. Nearly 60% of boating accidents can be attributed to operator error, poor judgment or inexperience, the Coast Guard says.
Make a float plan. Preparing a detailed plan of where you'll be and what you're doing will help rescuers locate you in the event of an emergency.
Wear proper clothing. Don't forget to wear rubber-sole shoes and plenty of sunscreen in addition to your life jacket. You don't want to fall and hurt yourself.
Protect your teeth. Consider wearing a mouthguard if you plan to jet or water ski.
Boating is a great pastime, but remember these simple rules to keep yourself safe.
Happy 4th of July from everyone at Delta Dental of Illinois!
