2013 Grantee Spotlight: Community Nurse Health Center
In 2013, the Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation Community Grants Program awarded the Community Nurse Health Center with an $8,000 grant. This will further their mission to enhance the health of the community.
The Community Nurse Health Center believes that no one should be denied health care because of his or her inability to pay.
Since 1921, the Community Nurse Health Center has been providing medical and dental services for low-income residents who live in western Cook County. The organization began with a small medical clinic in the back of a pharmacy in La Grange, Illinois. Over the last 93 years it has expanded to provide medical, dental and behavioral health services. In the past year the Center served more than 3,200 children and adults.
The dental clinic:
- has 4 operatories
- provides services to more than 2,000 patients in 4,800 appointment visits.
In addition to providing direct care to their patients, they have a strong focus on education and prevention and discuss oral health education during each visit. They also ensure their patients have the necessary home care supplies to be engaged in self-care and continue good oral health habits between visits.
The Community Nurse Health Center also has a health incentive program for their pediatric patients called Secret Santa. Children who have had their annual physical and dental exam are eligible to receive clothes, school supplies and items off of their holiday wish list at the end of the year. During its 25 years in existence, the program has donated almost 20,000 gift bags to the children.
With the support from important community partners such as the Delta Dental of Illinois Foundation, the Community Nurse Health Center can ensure more bright healthy smiles for low-income children who need preventative and restorative treatments.
