Attend a Free Dental Lecture Series and Receive 4 CE Credits

Join Delta Dental of Illinois and the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry for a dental lecture series covering a variety of topics such as dental sleep medicine, orofacial pain, and dental care for patients with special needs. The lecture series will be held from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, at the UIC College of Dentistry.  Participants will receive 4 CE credits for completing the program, which is free for dentists, oral health professionals and dental students. Dr. Sahni is Board certified by American Board of Orofacial Pain (ABOP) and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain. Dr. Sahni specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of TMD disorders, facial pain and headaches, neuralgias, bruxism, sleep disordered breathing, oral mucosal lesions and oral cancer detection. She utilizes non-surgical and minimally invasive techniques to treat these conditions. In this session, she will discuss the various kinds of pains that mimic tooth pains, describe a few cases covering orofacial pain conditions and help attendees identify red flags for orofacial pain conditions.

Dental Sleep Medicine: Where Medicine Meets Dentistry

Dr. Galang Boquiren took a keen interest in dental sleep medicine more than ten years ago and has collaborated with the medical profession through research and clinical care since then. Apart from teaching predoctoral dental students and orthodontic residents, she works in private practice and holds a hospital appointment at the John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. She is a Diplomate of both the American Board of Orthodontics and the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine.  Dr. Galang Boquiren has received numerous awards for her teaching and research accomplishments. In this lecture, she will define important terminology related to obstructive sleep apnea and dental sleep medicine, discuss the dentist's role in the field of sleep medicine and identify key treatment options for obstructive sleep apnea, including dental options.

Dental Care for Patients with Special Needs: Bridging the gap!

Dr. Leda Mugayar graduated in 1989 from the University of Campinas in Brazil and holds four master’s degrees: pediatric dentistry, radiology and oral diagnosis, preventive dentistry and special care in dentistry. She completed post graduate training in pediatric dentistry/ special needs at the University of Showa, Japan. She published a textbook about special care dentistry in 2000 in Brazil and contributed to other textbooks about pediatric medicine, pediatric genetics, psychology and other oral health topics. Dr. Mugayar has also been published in many international journals and scientific magazines.  In this lecture, she will provide a general definition of special health care needs, describe the basic principles of behavioral and clinical management using minimally invasive techniques, and discuss the protocols and guidelines for treating patients with special health care needs.
