Delta Dental of Illinois recently learned that a small number of its employees received a phishing email from an outside individual, soliciting their email login information. The company took immediate steps to conduct a comprehensive investigation, including retaining an independent forensic investigation firm and data review team to help identify what had happened and determine what information may have been affected. Delta Dental of Illinois finalized the data review and the affected members were discovered on October 17, 2019.
The investigation revealed that an outside individual obtained and used the email credentials of one employee to gain unauthorized access to that employee’s email account. Although the company does not have evidence that the outside individual actually viewed or used the contents of the email account, it is providing notice to potentially affected individuals out of an abundance of caution. No credit card, banking or other financial information was involved.
The company is notifying potentially affected individuals directly, issued a media alert and reported this incident to federal law enforcement.
Delta Dental of Illinois is offering affected individuals complimentary identity protection services to help alleviate any concerns that they may have as a result of this incident and to help prevent misuse of any information. The information affected by the incident may have included first and last name, address, date of birth, dental insurance information and/or Social Security number.
Delta Dental of Illinois takes its obligation to safeguard the privacy and security of its members’ personal information very seriously, and the company has taken immediate steps to fortify the protective measures it already had in place. It is important to note that this incident affected only a very small percentage of the company’s members. Further, the incident did not affect any other Delta Dental member companies or their members.
Since 1967, Delta Dental of Illinois has provided dental insurance and benefits products for Illinois-based groups and our members nationwide as our overall commitment to improving the overall health and well-being of all Illinoisans. Delta Dental of Illinois may have had your information if you had dental or vision benefits through your employer group with Delta Dental of Illinois. Delta Dental of Illinois may also have your information because your information because it was included in information your employer group sent in order for Delta Dental of Illinois to submit a quote for dental or vision coverage.
Not all members were affected by this incident; if you or your covered dependent did not receive a letter directly from us about this incident, your or their information was not contained in the affected email boxes and therefore, was not affected.
No other Delta Dental member company members were affected by this incident, and not all Delta Dental of Illinois members were affected by this incident. Our investigation has not found any evidence that this incident involved any unauthorized access to or use of any of Delta Dental of Illinois’ internal computer systems or network, or that any other information was affected.

Delta Dental of Illinois takes our obligation to protect the privacy and security of personal information seriously. After this incident was discovered, we promptly took steps to address this situation, including initiating an internal investigation and retaining an independent forensic investigation firm to assist us in our investigation of and response to this incident. Additionally, we have reset employee account passwords and implemented additional email security tools to help prevent this type of incident from reoccurring in the future. We have also consulted with law enforcement.
Delta Dental of Illinois has engaged Experian’s® IdentityWorks® to provide identity protection services at no cost to potentially affected individuals . We are offering identity theft protection and credit monitoring services through Experian’s® IdentityWorks® at no charge to potentially affected individuals. In the letters we mailed directly to potentially affected individuals, we included an activation code to enroll in these fraud detection tools. If you believe you were affected, please call 877-890-9332 between the hours of 9:00 AM and 9:00 PM (Eastern Time), Monday through Friday and 11:00 AM and 8:00 PM Saturday (excluding holidays). Note that you must complete the enrollment process by January 31, 2020.
